Japanese historical manga series, Vinland Saga, is coming back for a second season. On Wednesday, Wit Studio announced the arrival of Vinland Saga season 2 and even included a trailer that shows off brief snippets from the upcoming episodes. The series is written and illustrated by Makoto Yukimura. Before moving to the monthly manga magazine, it was first serialized in the youth-targeted Weekly Shonen Magazine.
The Vinland Saga season 1 follows the story of a young Viking explorer, Thorfinn. He joins a crew to seek revenge for the death of his father at the hands of Askeladd. However, the trailer of its second season doesn’t put light on very many things. But it suggests that Thorfinn is looking for more than revenge to give meaning to his life.
Vinland Saga is known for frequently blending real-life stories of prominent Viking warriors, kings and explorers with more dramatic fictional elements, much like the character of Thorfinn. The plot of Vinland Saga is all around the life story of a young man named Thorfinn who finds himself in a quest for revenge against his father’s killer. However, he indulged in the apparent greatness of war and honor.
But Thorfinn quickly changes as he endures having to survive alone and alongside the man; he vows to kill. He was trying to develop conflicting emotions towards the casualty of his past and the present life.
The story of the Vinland Saga is set in the 11th century AD with Northern Europe at war. After the latter kills Thorfinn’s father, he joins the company of the Viking and military commander Asked.
However, Thorfinn continues to challenge Askeladd in a contest. But he loses every time. In the beginning, he seeks revenge on Askeladd. But with time, the revenge turns into an uneasy and intense father/son relationship.
The bottom line is that the Vinland Saga is all about revenge, feelings, peace and relationship.
Vinland Saga season 2 Release date
In September 2020, the director of the Vinland Saga, Shuuhei Yabuta, came on Twitter and posted the sketches of three characters, Thorfinn, Askeladd and Canute. He mentioned that there was a small easter egg and asked the fans to figure it out.
At the bottom of each artwork, there were nordic runes. The runes translate to SEA SON TWO if you spell it out. The director Yabuta wrote in the comment section that there was no deeper meaning.
Followers also added a Japanese text that contains the characters complaining about the season 2 delay. They were asking how long we must wait for the Vinland Saga season 2, and to which Askeladd and Canute replied that it would be soon.
It pretty much confirmed that the series is definitely making a comeback with a second season. In March 2021, Abiru Takahiko, character designer, tweeted that they already started working on the Vinland Saga.
All this confirmed that a portion of the Vinland Saga is set on a farm that wasn’t covered by in the first season. After a lot of speculation, on 7 July 2021, the manga artist Makoto Yukimura confirmed the second season’s production.
Apart from all this great news, we still do not have an official release date. It is expected that Vinland Saga season 2 will be released in late 2021 or early 2022.

Then it transferred into Kodansha’s seinen manga magazine Monthly Afternoon. They were publishing new chapters. On 23 October 2020, 24 manga volumes were published in Japan, and later on 21 July 2021, the next volumes will be released. However, the first eight volumes were adopted by the first season of Vinland Saga.
