Usually, when we talk about fruits, we always associate them with “healthy”, “juicy”, “fresh”, etc. We think of it as something that is giving us good things. However, our body doesn’t react the same way to all fruits because not all fruits have the same components, even sugar contents (see here). The same goes for dogs. Read out Can Dog Eat Peaches? Dos And Don’ts.
Foods For Dogs
There are foods that dogs would benefit from but there are also foods that could harm them. If you love your pets, you have to be very careful of what you give to them. When you feed your dogs foods that you are not supposed to, they may have an upset stomach, and some are even poisoned to death.
Following are some foods that are healthy to feed to your dogs:
Fish
Fish are healthy, they are rich in amino acids and good fats. The best fish to feed your dog is sardines, which have soft bones for calcium, and salmon, which is rich in protein and vitamins.
Tuna is also good for dogs as it is an abundant source of omega-3 fatty acids which is good for your dog’s heart and eyes. Make sure also that you avoid canned tuna since it contains sodium and mercury which are not good if taken too much.
Pork
Pork is rich in protein which your dog needs, so you may let them have it. It is also rich in amino acids and has more calorie content/pound compared to other meats.
Following Are Some Foods That Are Okay To Feed To Your Dog:
Bread
You may feed your dog plain bread in small amounts. Just make sure it doesn’t have raisins. It is also better to make sure that the bread you are feeding him does not contain unnecessary preservatives. However, bread doesn’t have nutritional value and is packed with carbohydrates/calories.
Ham
Ham can be fed to dogs but remember that it contains high sodium and fat, which means it is not healthy. Make sure they eat just a little and once a week is fine.
Fruits You May Feed Your Dogs:
Apples
Vitamin A and Vitamin C and fiber are abundant in this fruit. This is recommended in older dogs since it is low in protein and fat.
Bananas
Banana is a low-calorie food and is high in biotin, copper, potassium, fiber, and vitamins. Bananas also are rich in sugar so you might want to give them to your dogs like treats, not a normal meal.
Mangoes
You will find mangoes as an abundant source of Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, and Vitamin E. Do not forget though that this fruit is high in sugar so you might want to give this occasionally to your dog.
Oranges
You may feed your dogs oranges but they do not like citrus that much, especially those with a strong smell. Oranges are rich in potassium, fiber, and vitamin c.
Peaches
These are an excellent source of Vitamin A and fiber. You may feed your dog peaches in small amounts. These can also help in fighting infections.
The dos and don’ts in feeding peaches to your dog:
Dos
- Wash the fruit thoroughly before serving.
- Give them peaches that are fresh and choose organic ones so you will be sure that it does not contain pesticides which could be harmful to you and your dog.
- Serve it in small amounts since it contains high sugar.
- Give them peach-infused products as treats like peach dog cookies, peach popsicles, etc.
Don’ts
- Serve peach pits, the steam, and the leaves since they are all toxic for your dog.
- Give dogs canned peaches or anything that is preserved like jam. This is because they contain more sugar than the fruit alone.
- Give your dog peaches if he is diabetic.
Other Fruits You May Feed Your Dog Includes:
- Blueberries
- Cantaloupe
- Cranberries
- Cucumbers
- Pears
- Pineapples
- Raspberries
- Strawberries
- Watermelon
Do not forget the 10% rule that veterinarians are always reminding us: treats should only be 10% of your dog’s diet, 90% for his regular food. Vegetables and fruits are counted as treats because dogs do not need them for a healthy diet but they could be excellent treats.
However, the effects of foods on your dog will depend on how their body would react to it. Each body is different, thus, giving also different responses to foods taken. Always consult the veterinarian for any pet concerns.
